Identification & Features

Their back is olive green to dark brown with a silvery white belly. They have small, well-defined spots on both sides. The anal, pelvic and pectoral fins have a distinctive, white leading edge. Spawning fish may have a bright orange blush along the sides and belly.

Habitat

Brook Trout are found in cold, clear and well-oxygenated streams and lakes. They prefer summer water temperatures that do not exceed 20 C (68 F).

Spawning

Occurs in the fall of each year in shallow gravel beds at the headwaters of their home streams. The number of eggs will vary from 100 to 5,000 depending on the size of the female and will hatch in approximately 50 days in 50-degree water.

Food

Brook Trout feed primarily on insects, crustaceans, worms and small fish.

Size

Because Brook Trout live in cold streams, they grow slowly and most fish do not exceed the 8″ to 14″ range. Their average life expectancy is generally not longer than 4 years.

Angling Tips

Brook Trout are aggressive feeders and will react to a wide variety of well presented lures, flies or natural baits. Fly-fishermen will find great success with small nymphs and dry flies when presented using a stealthy approach and a lightweight fly rod such as a 2- or 3-weight outfit in the 7′ to 8′ range.
