Offshore

General information

Offshore fishing is a somewhat generic term used by anglers when referring to deep-water areas of the oceans. These areas are commonly on the edge of main ocean currents and drop offs. Offshore fishing is also known as blue water fishing.

Fish Species

Anglers targeting offshore species are most often after big game species, such as Tuna, Marlin, Sailfish and other Billfish. Other targeted game fish include Mahi Mahi or Dorado, Kingfish, Wahoo and many other pelagic fish that vary by region.

Angling Tips

Because of the wide expanse of water and species ability to travel long distances in a day, trolling and chumming are the two most popular types of fishing. Trolling is used to cover a large expanse of water to locate fish. Chumming is done normally when drifting with the wind or current and is used to help the fish find you. Trolling uses both natural baits as well as lures. At times live bait is also used. Although fishing offshore can be done at great distances from land, it can also be done fairly close to shore if depths and ocean currents are appropriate. Generally, offshore fishing is done with medium heavy to extra heavy tackle and gear and most always with conventional reels. Line test may range from 20 to 150 pound test.
