Inshore
General Information
Inshore fishing is a term generally referred to by anglers as coastal areas consisting of bays, estuaries, surf, and protected areas within sight of land.
Fish Species
Anglers targeting inshore species are most often after a wide variety of fish species ranging from Tarpon, Redfish, Snapper, Lingcod, Sea Trout, Bonefish, Flounder, Snook, Cobia, Sea Bass, Halibut and Bluefish.
With the wide range of species available and the limited travel time to fishing spots, it is easy to see why inshore fishing is such a popular type of saltwater fishing. Since many inshore areas are the spawning grounds for many species, the balance between freshwater and saltwater provides abundant food sources; inshore fishing can provide some the most productive and fast paced action of all saltwater fishing.
Angling Tips
Many different angling methods can be very effective when inshore fishing. Bait fishing is many times the most popular and most productive. Anglers do use other tactics such as jigging, trolling, casting lures or plugs, fly-fishing and in some cases, stalking and sightfishing. Inshore fishing, in general, is well suited to light tackle and can be fished with both spinning and casting gear. Equipment in the 6-20 pound range will handle most species. The rule of thumb is to match your tackle to the gamefish you are pursuing. Remember some inshore species such as Tarpon or Halibut can reach weights of over 50 pounds and are more than willing to test an angler’s tackle and skill.
